Their Story

If you see the word Mead you are probably conjuring up images of people with flowing beards and a penchant for axes, mead was certainly not seen in a trendy urban craft beer shop and just like beards, mead is going through a revolution of its own. We feel that the world’s oldest alcohol needed some refreshment so we created our light sparkling version using modern beer brewing techniques. The Wye Valley Meadery was founded in late 2018 by brothers Kit and Matt Newell. Matt has been a hobby bee-keeper for over 15 years and in 2018 left the comfort of full time employment to give commercial bee-keeping a go, upscaling his hive collection to over 150 and producing excellent quality honey from the apiarys all along the Wye Valley. After years of homebrewing, brothers Kit and Matt struck upon a recipe and method to brew mead in a beer style and the Wye Valley Meadery was born. Kit left cushy office life and moved from Reading back the Wye Valley where together, they are brewing full time and increasing batch size month after month.

We launched with our Honey & Hops mead, which is dry hopped with Citra hops at the end of the fermentation. We now make 5 flavours with seasonally inspired bonus brews made for limited releases. Convinced we had something worth bragging about, we entered our Hopped mead into the Great Taste Awards and won two stars! As well as one star for our Wye Valley Honey – the base ingredient for our meads. Constantly experimenting with this untapped avenue of mead, we are sure you will taste something unique.
